one6G research activities presented at the 2024 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference
one6G members who collaborate as part of one6G Working Group 2 presented their joint paper on native support of AI applications in 6G networks at the 3rd Workshop on 6G Architecture collocated with the 2024 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC 2024), which took place on April 21-24, 2024, in Dubai.
The publication titled “Native Support of AI Applications in 6G Mobile Networks via an Intelligent User Plane” investigates how AI applications – with their challenging demands – can be supported natively in 6G. Thereby, the authors focus on the specific case of In-Network Computing (INC)-assisted Split-AI: A Neural Network (NN) is split vertically into several parts and the execution of the layers of the split NN are offloaded to the entities of an Intelligent 6G User Plane. This can bring many benefits to end-users, network providers, and the application. For instance, reducing the energy consumption of the mobile UE, minimizing the network traffic volume, or speeding up the NN inference. The authors further elaborate on the challenges of a native AI integration in 6G and derive key requirements for the 6G architecture in terms of novel capabilities in Control Plane and User Plane and in terms of the required information exchange.
The paper resulted from joint activities within WI207 (Intelligent User Plane and In-Network Computing), with authors from several academic and industrial institutions: Docomo (Germany), University of Calabria (Italy), University of Aveiro (Portugal), University of Thessaly (Greece), Huawei (Germany), ITI (Spain), NTNU (Norway), and KCL (UK).
