one6G WG2 releases the 6th edition of the “6G Technology Overview” White Paper at the one6G Summit 2026

The one6G Working Group 2 (WG2) has announced the release of the latest edition of its flagship White Paper, titled “6G Technology Overview” (Sixth Edition), during the one6G Summit 2026 in London, UK. The publication updates and expands upon the core technological pillars expected to define the evolution toward 6G networks by 2030 and beyond.

Scope

6G is expected to meet diverse and often conflicting demands—extending beyond 5G limits with up to 100 times higher data rates and ten times lower latency, while enabling combinations of extreme requirements never seen before. Beyond technical capabilities, 6G must also act as a foundational driver for societal sustainability by prioritizing high energy efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint.

The 12 enabling technologies

The 6th edition details 12 key enabling technologies that constitute the nucleus of the emerging 6G technological ecosystem:

  • Terahertz frequencies

  • 6G radio access

  • Next-generation MIMO

  • Cooperative connected and automated mobility

  • Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)

  • Non-terrestrial networks (NTN)

  • Multimodal sensing, computing, communication, and control for 6G remote operation

  • 6G empowering robotics

  • Distributed and federated artificial intelligence

  • Intelligent user plane

  • Flexible programmable infrastructures

  • Sustainability

For each domain, the white paper outlines the background, use cases, and state of the art, while pinpointing key difficulties and open research problems. It highlights major advances such as seamless human-robot collaboration, network programmability, and the integration of AI across user plane and network functions.

An evolving baseline

The authors emphasize that these 12 pillars represent the current understanding of the 6G landscape. Future editions of the White Paper will continue to track advancements across these areas and introduce new enabling technologies as they emerge to form a coherent, operator-friendly, and sustainable 6G system fabric.
