IEEE Communications Society’s First Workshop on Emerging 6G Technologies at King’s College London

On October 28, 2024, the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) hosted the first edition of the Emerging 6G Technologies workshop at King’s College London, London, UK. The event attracted a diverse group of researchers, industry leaders, and early-career professionals who gathered to discuss how 6G wireless technology is set to revolutionize different applications including robotics, driving advancements in automation and intelligent systems.

The workshop was kicked-off by Prof. Aryan Kaushik, Assosiate Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University, who, after a warm welcome and introduction, opened the floor to a series of keynote talks delivered by distinguished speakers:

  • Goal-Oriented Semantic Communications for 6G by Prof. Yansha Deng, King’s College London
  • Key 6G Enabling Technologies by Prof. Huseyin Arslan, Istanbul Medipol University
  • Integrated Sensing and Communications by Prof. Christos Masouros, University College London
  • Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces by Dr. Vincenzo Sciancalepore, NEC Laboratories Germany
  • Non-Terrestrial Networks and Multiple Access for 6G by Prof. Wonjae Shin, Korea University

A key highlight of the event was the panel discussion Emerging 6G Technologies: Industry and Academic Perspective, featuring both academic and industrial experts including Dr. Mona Ghassemian (Huawei, one6G), Prof. Alessandro Guidotti (CNIT), Prof. Ramona Trestian (LDTRC, Middlesex University), Prof. Haris Pervaiz (University of Essex), and Prof. Purav Shah (LDTRC, Middlesex University).

Dr. Mona Ghassemian, a distinguished expert in 6G applications for robotics, titled her talk Advancing Robotics: The Role of Emerging 6G Technologies, and covered several important topics, including:

  • Robotic Use Cases and Requirements: Exploring specific domains within robotics that stand to benefit from 6G advancements.
  • 6G Features for Robotics: Identifying critical new capabilities that will enhance robotic functions.
  • Enabling Technologies: Discussing the technical enablers that will boost both robotics and 6G performance.
  • Architectural Impacts: Assessing necessary adjustments in network architecture to support next-generation robotic applications.
  • AI, Privacy, and Ethics: Addressing privacy and ethical considerations surrounding AI and robotic data.

Besides the talks and a lively panel discussion, the workshop celebrated outstanding research through its Poster Prize Competition, highlighting cutting-edge research from emerging scholars.

The winners were:

  1. Yang Su from King’s College London for Energy-Efficient Cellular-Connected UAV Swarm Control Optimization.
  2. Alessandro Bigiotti from LDTRC, Middlesex University for Blockchain-enabled Traceability and Safety of Road Freight Transport.
  3. Mahnoor Yaqoob from LDTRC, Middlesex University for Digital Twin for Intelligent Resource Allocation for Multi-Tenant Networks Beyond 5G.

The workshop was organized with the support of the one6G Association, Manchester Metropolitan University, Paris-Saclay University, King’s College London, and Middlesex University London. The full agenda and program details are available here.

Mark your calendars for the second workshop in the series, featuring speakers from one6G, which will take place on November 22, 2024, at Middlesex University, UK.
