“Revolutionizing Connectivity: Unleashing the Power of 6G for Robotics” – one6G-endorsed panel at the IEEE MeditCom 2024

On July 9, 2024, the IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (IEEE MeditCom 2024) hosted a captivating panel discussion titled “Revolutionizing Connectivity: Unleashing the Power of 6G for Robotics.” This dynamic session, endorsed by one6G, brought together leading experts from academia and industry to explore how the transformative potential of 6G can empower the future of robotic systems.

The panel was moderated by Dr. Fatemeh Golpayegani, Assistant Professor at University College Dublin, who leads the Multi-Agent Systems and Sustainable Solutions Research Group. Dr. Golpayegani set the stage by highlighting the convergence of 6G and robotics as a pivotal moment in technological advancement, with the panel delving into how 6G can unlock new frontiers in robotic connectivity, perception, and control.

The first panelist, Dr. Mona Ghassemian from Huawei, presented “6G Enabled Robotics: A Standards Outlook (IEEE & 3GPP SA1/SA2).” She provided insights into the standards-driven approach to aligning 6G and robotics, focusing on establishing a common language and interoperability to accelerate the adoption and integration of these transformative technologies. Next, Andrés Meseguer Valenzuela from ITI explored “Enhanced robot fleet management with 6G networks.” He highlighted how 6G’s enhanced capabilities, including edge computing, can revolutionize the coordination and optimization of robotic fleets, enabling new levels of efficiency and responsiveness.

Prof. Aryan Kaushik from the University of Sussex discussed “Integrated Sensing and Communications-empowered 6G Robotics.” He emphasized how 6G’s integrated sensing and communication capabilities can enable advanced perception, localization, and coordination for robotic systems, paving the way for more autonomous and adaptive behaviors. The final panelist, Dr. Alejandro Blanco Pizarro from Telefónica, delivered a presentation titled “Toward low-latency and robust wireless communication [Wireless/ RIS/ positioning- operators perspective],” in which he delved into the potential of 6G to provide ubiquitous, seamless, and reliable connectivity for robotic systems, enabling them to operate across diverse environments and scenarios, from industrial settings to urban spaces and beyond.
The panel discussion and the Q&A session that followed provided a comprehensive and insightful exploration of the transformative potential of 6G in the realm of robotics. The session highlighted key technological advancements, standardization efforts, and practical applications that will shape the future of robotic systems, reinforcing the IEEE MeditCom’s reputation as a leading platform for cutting-edge discussions in communications and networking.
